Biography

My name is JayJay and I originally lived in a small town called Palmerston North in New Zealand. My Upbringing was always based around sports like rugby, basketball, touch, hockey, volleyball and many more. During high school I played most sports and made high level squads. After finishing highly school I got straight into work as all around labourer

Seeking for more opportunities I moved to Australia in 2009 with my girlfriend to 'the land of opportunities', Determined for a healthy lifestyle I found a local spot to train, so I took a free trial at Infinity martial arts to learn MMA and BJJ in 2011 the same year my son was born.

The more involved I got into MMA and BJJ the more interested I became, week to week I was getting great results , weight loss and knowledge in MMA and BJJ. I then took the challenge to compete at my first Queensland State Championships as a white belt taking home my first bronze. This sparked up my whole journey of BJJ. While I was blue belt I was proud to have had my son, at the age of 2 I got him straight into 2-4year old bjj fun and fitness and he loves it. I continue to train till this day with the support of my girlfriend and my son Enjoying the culture of BJJ & MMA and team mates.

Early March 2017 I was offered to teach at Infinity the kids and adults classes full time alongside instructor Tyrone Coppedge. I am a currently a proud and passionate brown belt and a MMA instructor and I am looking forward to the future fight team and BJJ team in Springfield.

Question: What will you suggest to the newcomers?

Answer: I suggest all newcomers to train all aspects of martial arts training regularly so they get the best of their potential.

Question: What does it mean for you to be a fighter?

Answer: It means engaging hard work and dedication to keep fit daily, to meet the requirements of endurance and strength at their highest abilities, also to eat/drink right foods to maintain energy maximizing my performance through training and competition.

Question: What are the essential things for the training?

Answer: Essential things for training are: weekly planning, family time, day to day training both physically and mentally, food preparation and drinking a lot of water.

Question: What separates you from every other fighter in your division?

Answer: What separates me from the rest is my unique Jiu Jitsu game I use different style of attacks counters and defense, training under Tyrone Copped who is a well round black belt Jiu Jitsu fighter in Australia I manage well under high level pressure.

Question: What is the meaning of success in your mind?

Answer: success to me mean everything, the feeling of accomplishment is a great feeling as my ancestors past down a lot of knowledge and strength that I hold on to very dearly teaching me that what everything I do I do with 100%

Question: With whom you would like to fight, and why?

Answer: Considering my last comp in July this year, Gold Coast, I unfortunately could not continue due to broken ribs but I would really like a rematch with Rhys Dowden who is a very classy Jiu Jitsu fight and very tough as well.

Question: Is there any difference b/w your common days’ diet and during competition training diet?

Answer: My body weight month prior to competition is usually 3-5 kg from goal weight of course body weights a lot better in preparation so I intensify my training and add more greens to my diet.

Question: How does a beginner will prepare for the competition? Any advice for beginners?

Answer: I would rely more on what weight class you're comfortable with and train twice as hard eat as much as you can to recover muscles, give yourself enough time just in case you need to cut weight but make sure you have someone accompanied you through your process.

Question: How is it helpful to have the information about your competitor?

Answer: There's always an advantage of anyone's experience in your division but for me personally I like to take the Challenge more than find out what I have to deal with.

Question: Is the martial arts necessary for a common person? How?

Answer: Yes there is, learning Brazilian jujitsu has showing me how much discipline, hard work and how many benefits this may give to people, every martial art has so much to give in self-defense, self-motivation and self-confidence without these assets you'll have no understanding of how to defend yourself.

Question: Which moment is memorable for you in your past competitions?

Answer: Most memorable moments of jujitsu was when I was a white belt, this was one of my most active times but most enjoyable all-round fights with different competitors were always a challenge, I would always train and do things harder for upcoming events to get better and better.

Question: How do martial arts help to build a leader?

Answer: It helps you to problem solve on the spot it even helps you lead by Sample for lower belts and first timers, having any substantial amount of knowledge towards Martial arts gives you more of a chance to teach others through techniques and through training.

Question: What would be your dream fight?

Answer: My dream fight would be going against the best of the best in Australia and claim my name is a great jujitsu fighter.

Question: Do you have any advice for your competitors?

Answer: If you are competing I advise you to get involve to as many events and fights so you build the confidence and get the knowledge of competition and your competitors.

Question: How much importance has the sports gear in any competition?

Answer: Most competitors should have all BJJ GI in good condition and Rash Guards competition approved so we meet the requirements of what event we may be in.

Question: What should we learn from the legends /or from the seniors? Who is your inspiration?

Answer: We should be guiding the new generation to succeed to more, to be humble and to work hard 100% inside and out the gym. My inspiration is my head instructor Neil Owen who trained alongside Roger Gracie, he is a great mentor to everyone.

Answer: I would like to compliment all my instructors through the 7years journey of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Neil Owen, Ryan Creary, Tyrone Coppedge, all my team mates and students who have helped me along the way.
