Q&A Session Between Minjum Faith Rogers and Elite Sports

Answer::: There is no secret to getting good at Jiu Jitsu, you just need to show up and train..... Its a long road to black so buckle up and enjoy!.

Question: What does it mean to you to be a fighter?

Answer:: Discipline.... Determination.... Respect ..... Resilience.... and a positive attitude!

Question: What are the essential things you include in your training?

EGear you feel comfortable in; and actually wanting to train!!! You have to have the drive.... that means showing up even when you don’t feel like it.... that’s the true meaning of ‘Wanting’ to train! Sounds odd but it’s true....

Question: What separates you from every other fighter in your division?

Answer:: I believe I show heart in every roll that I have... You can see that I love Jiu Jitsu. Whether I win or lose... you’ll always see me smile!

Question: What is the meaning of success in your mind?

Answer:: Success is something you feel in yourself.... success is when you don’t pay any mind to the thoughts and words of others.... you just continue doing what you do, regardless....

Question: With whom you would like to fight, and why?

Answer:: I don’t think there is anyone in particular that I would want to have a roll with but I love a good war with anyone!!:).

Question: Is there any difference b/w your common days’ diet and during competition training diet?

Answer:: I like to eat well all year round, I don’t ever say I’m on a diet or dieting as it’s a lifestyle that I live.... The only thing that differs is, if I feel like eating something bad when there are no comps coming up, I’ll eat it:).

Question: How does a beginner prepare for the competition? Any advice for beginners?

Answer:: I would just say, make sure you register for the right weight category as you don’t want to worry about cutting weight on top of all the stress and anxiety that can come with competing. So just focus on your game and what you want to achieve on the day.... try not to put too much pressure on yourself to win or submit... just have fun!

Question: How is it helpful to have the information about your competitor?

Answer:: Having knowledge about my competitor has helped me a few times by being able to observe that person and adjust my game accordingly. It has also gone against me, as I find myself comparing myself to that person, wondering if I’m good enough.... so I try not to overthink things....

Question: . Is the martial arts necessary for a common person? How?

Answer:: I definitely think that Jiu Jitsu is something all women should know a little bit about... purely from the self defence angle.... but is it for the common person? Absolutely... Jiu Jitsu is for most people... it may not be someone’s cup of tea but you never know unless you try...

Question: Which moment is memorable for you in your past competitions?

Answer:: I was at Pan Pacific Championships in 2014 and a white belt, I had seen my opponent just tear up her division.... then it was my turn to face her in open weight.... I went in so terrified and she ran circles around me... scored over 20 points.... the next day, I faced her first in Open Nogi... I thought to myself... I’ve come all this way to Melbourne and this may very well be my last match... I don’t care about winning I’m just going to have fun.... and I performed wayyy better than I did the previous day, I managed to score first points, it was an all out war, I went for Arm Bar and she escaped, she went for triangle and I escaped and she only beat me by two points.... I was happy with my efforts and it made me realise that.... you must first always have a positive mindset:).

Question: How do martial arts help to build a leader?

Answer:: There are many aspects in Martial Arts and not just Jiu Jitsu that help build a leader.... I think it’s a natural process.... as you train and new people come, you just naturally pass on the knowledge that you have acquired and then they end up passing on their interpretation of the sport to the next person... and so on and so forth... it’s a beautiful thing!

Question: What would be your dream fight?

Answer:: Being invited to an international competition overseas, preferably a submission only competition..... haha I don’t play for points!

Question: How is the road plan necessary for any competition?

Answer:: I think you should always have a goal, not necessarily a goal to win or place but something smaller, like ‘I’m going to train hard and eat right and my goal is to hit that sweep I’ve been practicing or maybe that guard pass’ ... when you set goals like that, you minimise the disappointment in yourself......  and that’s really important for new competitors.....  but me personally, I feel like I need to tell myself I’m training to win, I want to win, I’m going to win, it’s going to be me up there..... so when things get hard at training, you keep driving forward and say no.... I’m not giving up and I know what I want.... I haven’t always trained in this way and it is hard to say without sounding like a douche.... but I think you need to want it!!

Question: Do you have any advice for  competitors?

Answer:: As long as you leave it all out there, you have no reason to feel bad about a performance..... win or learn!!!

Question: How much importance has the sports gear in any competition?

Answer:: It’s extremely important.... you need to be as comfortable as possible and your gear should be the last thing you need to worry about. Having gear that you believe in and can rely on takes away a bit of the stress for the day....

Question: What should we learn from the legends /or from the seniors? Who is your inspiration?

We should always be looking at people for who they are and not only what they can do, as it’s ultimately who they are as people that you can credit their success.... I take inspiration from a lot of different people.... whether it be someone on the world stage or someone in my gym... I appreciate things for what they are and not who they come from :)

Question: To whom you would like to compliment for your success?

Answer:: Neil Owen for creating such a diverse team of gyms/instructors so that we can access any and all of them at our leisure.... and for always passing on knowledge that leaves you feeling like a new person, whether you’ve spent five minutes or six hours with him, he has that impact with his words and his Jiu Jitsu.My coach Tyrone Coppedge of coarse for always pushing me and never limiting me. He’s been there since day one, he gave me his time and energy whenever I needed it and allowed me to fall in love with Jiu Jitsu in my own time....  And my handsome Pati for holding it down at home, it’s not going to be easy training when you have three kids but he is so supportive and encouraging and he allows me to train whenever I need/want to :)
